BitMEX to Cut 100% of Workforce as Exchange Closure Is Announced on July 23, 2026
BitMEX announced on July 23, 2026, that it will shut down its cryptocurrency exchange on September 23, 2026, at 04:00 UTC. The company’s workforce impact was listed at 100%, although BitMEX did not disclose the number of jobs affected.
The closure follows a strategic review of BitMEX’s business and the broader cryptocurrency industry. The board of HDR Global Trading Limited, BitMEX’s owner and operator, made the decision to close the exchange. “This comes with a heavy heart for all of us at the company and has not been taken lightly,” BitMEX said in its announcement.
BitMEX immediately stopped accepting new account registrations. The exchange will continue operating normally until the closure time, although risk limits will take effect on August 26 at 04:00 UTC, preventing users from opening new positions while allowing them to reduce existing ones. The company has urged customers to close open positions and withdraw their assets as soon as practical.
Founded in 2014, BitMEX is a cryptocurrency derivatives exchange known for introducing leveraged perpetual swap contracts. The company said its platform processed professional-grade crypto derivatives and maintained a security record in which no user funds were lost to hacks during its more than 11 years of operations. After the closure, users will still be able to access their accounts, view wallet balances and transaction histories, and withdraw remaining funds. BitMEX also said it had unstaked all BMEX tokens held on the platform, making them immediately available in users’ accounts.
