Ethereum Foundation cuts 54 jobs, about 20% of workforce, in June 23 restructuring

The Ethereum Foundation said on June 23, 2026, that it is “changing shape” as it concludes a months-long reorganization tied to the implementation of its Mandate and Treasury Management Policy. As part of the restructuring, the research-focused organization said it is parting ways with 54 colleagues, or roughly 20% of the EF.

In its blog post, the foundation said the process leaves it with “the structure, activities, and people necessary for execution on the critical tasks ahead of us,” while also reducing headcount. It added that many of the departing employees “will be finding ways to contribute to Ethereum from outside the EF in the coming weeks.”

The Ethereum Foundation said its new structure includes five clusters covering protocol layer, access layer, user layer, community layer, and institutional layer, along with a cluster focused on operations and another made up of management and teams directly supporting management work. The organization said each domain requires a different approach, different accountability, and an internal structure tailored to the work being done.

The foundation described the protocol cluster as responsible for ensuring Ethereum continues to deliver on its foundational promise of scaling self-sovereignty. It said the group’s work includes hardening and scaling the protocol, reducing unnecessary complexity, minimizing trusted dependencies, defending the transaction pipeline, and advancing long-horizon research such as post-quantum security, zkEVM, and L1 privacy into protocol changes.

The post said it will share more details about the new structure in the coming month, and also noted that it is providing support for people leaving the organization.
