Yield Guild Games lays off 35 employees on July 7, 2026 as it shuts down YGG Play

Yield Guild Games said on July 7, 2026 that it is sunsetting YGG Play, its Web3 game publishing arm, and laying off 35 employees as part of a broader shift in focus. The company said the decision follows a difficult market environment that has made the business unit commercially unsustainable.

In its announcement, YGG said it had built YGG Play around the idea that there was an underserved market of Web3 natives who would enjoy casual, bite-sized games with crypto elements built into gameplay. The company said it tested that thesis with its own game, LOL Land, before launching YGG Play to help other games grow through publishing support, community, and launchpad resources.

YGG said YGG Play signed nine games, worked with IPs including Pudgy Penguins, partnered with creators, and organized events worldwide. It also said the business crossed $9 million in lifetime revenue by the end of Q1 2026. The company did not disclose what percentage of its workforce was affected by the layoffs.

The company attributed the shutdown to “external economic realities,” citing the October 10, 2025 crypto market crash and the broader downturn in crypto and gaming markets. YGG said it does not expect the crypto consumer market or the Web3 games publishing market to recover sufficiently in the near term. It added that the move is intended to refocus the company on areas where it believes it can build a more sustainable long-term business.

YGG said it remains “entirely committed” to its core mission of providing opportunities through technology. The company did not provide additional details on what comes next beyond the closure of YGG Play.
