Coinbase is a platform that facilitates the easy conduct of the digital currency Bitcoin for consumers, businesses, and developers. This includes the buying and selling of Bitcoin, secure storage of Bitcoin in the cloud, and a suite of merchant tools.

At Coinbase, we're currently experiencing rapid growth in transactional activity due to media exposure in Bitcoin. We had an incredible 2013, growing 80x in users to over 800,000, closed a Series A and Series B, totalling $31M from investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and Union Square Ventures, doing all this with a team of only 8 people.

Coinbase was launched on June 1, 2012 by Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam. It is based in San Francisco, California.

The company received a US$5 million investment from Union Square Ventures in December 2012. In May 2013, Coinbase raised US$7 million in Series A funding from Andreessen Horowitz, Union Square Ventures and Ribbit Capital. In December 2013, the company received a US$25 million investment, from the venture capital firms Andreessen Horowitz, Union Square Ventures (USV) and Ribbit Capital. On December 16, 2013, Coinbase was one of the many companies to receive a BitLicense from New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). On March 26, 2014 Coinbase announced the completion of its Series B funding round. The company raised US$30 million from several investors including DFJ Growth, NYSE Euronext's NYX Fund, and USAA. In July 2014, it was announced that Coinbase had raised US$75 million in Series C funding from a variety of investors including DFJ Growth and NYSE Euronext's NYX Fund. In December 2014 Coinbase raised US$100 million in funding from several venture capital firms. The funding was led by DFJ Growth and included investments from NYSE Euronext's NYX Fund and USAA along with other firms such as Andreessen Horowitz.

Coinbase has built the world's leading compliant cryptocurrency platform serving over 68 million accounts in more than 100 countries. With multiple successful products, and our vocal advocacy for blockchain technology, we have played a major part in mainstream awareness and adoption of cryptocurrency. We are proud to offer an entire suite of products that are helping build the cryptoeconomy and increase economic freedom around the world.
