Thirdly, I joined Santander UK Graduate scheme so that I can gain a valuable insight of how banking works. The goal of the program was to provide us with end-to-end knowledge of how the Bank was operating by changing our position every 6 months in a new department. The Graduate Scheme enabled me to learn how traditional retail banking worked, the problems associated with the legacy processes and how to handle change to improve existing mechanisms. As a result of the program I got a comprehensive understanding of Retail and Corporate banking. Finally, my motive for leaving the UK and Santander was connected with my entrepreneurial spirit. During my visits for holidays in Bulgaria I encountered a customer problem associated with the inability to book tables online in clubs, bars and restaurants. In addition, the process of welcoming guests was extremely slow due to lack of technology such as an online booking management system. After making a thorough research I decided to challenge the traditional method of taking reservations by the phone in Bulgaria and develop an innovative web based booking management platform- JustBook.bg. In the beginning the undertaking was extremely challenging as I had no investment and decided to start the business with my savings. For the first few months of the business my goal was to design how the system was going to work by meeting various potential customers and building a capable team to run the operations. After recruiting the right people to help me manage the business, we have developed the business side of JustBook.bg and successfully sold the platform to some of the biggest venues in the country. The next step was to start advertising JustBook.bg to individual customers to use instead of calling on the phone. This was by no doubt one of the biggest challenges I can face, as I had no advertising budged. So how do we get to people without spending money? It is simple... growth hacking! We made the contract for using the software such that in order to be our customer the bars, clubs and restaurants must advertise JustBook.bg as their online booking solution instead of the phone number. These venues in Bulgaria have substantial marketing budgets especially for events, which they advertise on Billboards, Radio, social media and flyers. Our contract implied that they have to put our logo and website on every single marketing material they have and in exchange they get 50% discount for using the software. The effect of this outstanding, we not only got exposure to all clients of the venues that used JustBook.bg, but also other clubs, bars and restaurants wanted to join JustBook.bg because their competitors were advertising us. What we did next was to form our own team to take control of Social Media, design and outdoor marketing so we can ensure we have our brand’s logo and web links on every single post in social media and advertising material. So ultimately what happened was that we were actually earning money from doing a service, which had a final goal to advertise JustBook.bg using the venues marketing budget. Overall, the whole adventure of founding and developing JustBook.bg from just an idea to one of the biggest booking platforms in Bulgaria taught me various skills such as leadership, ability to build relationships, thinking outside of the box, hiring and coaching employees effectively, adapting my management style according to people and strong communication skills. As an entrepreneur and former bank employee, I find the position of Head of Growth as a suitable challenge that will enable me to build and develop something new and innovative for the Bulgarian Market. I am the founder and CEO of JustBook.bg and have developed a state of the art, innovative booking platform, which is an intermediary between clubs, bars and restaurants and their customers. Designing such a product from scratch requires not only a lot of research but also a lot of communication with end users of the product. This involves making a lot of mistakes and quickly learning from them in order to come up with a product that suits everyone’s requirements. What my experience in working for JustBook.bg taught me was the ability quickly learn from my mistakes and swiftly come up with a solution. In addition, it thought me to be flexible in everything I do in order to adapt to the fast changing market circumstances. In addition, JustBook.bg is a marketplace platform, which requires both venues and clients in order to function efficiently. Working on such a product is extremely challenging, as you have to keep a both sides satisfied with your product. As an intermediary platform we had to be extremely careful to ensure our clients are happy with the service, therefore we had to develop proactive support teams and hire key clients relationship management to be able to understand our customers improvement requirements. During my time in Santander UK I have worked both on the Retail and Corporate side of banking. What’s the most impactful growth initiative you have led? The most impactful growth initiative I have led was developing the online booking platform JustBook.bg from just an idea to the largest online reservation platform in Bulgaria in less than two years. As a marketplace platform and In order to be a sustainable business JustBook.bg requires both venues to use the software and clients to book tables online. So how do you let people know about the existence of JustBook.bg without an advertising budget? The answer is growth hacking! Here are the steps we have taken in order to reach people and businesses without actually investing money! Step 1: Provide discount to bars, clubs and restaurants for using the software if they advertise JustBook.bg on all of their marketing materials as an alternative to phone calls. The venues have substantial marketing budgets for advertising on billboards, posters, flyers and social media. We made our contract in such a way that if they want the discount they have to put our logo and website on every piece of marketing material. From their point of view, it does not cost anything to put a logo or link on the design of the commercial, but for us it made a big difference as suddenly we became appearing on multiple advertising channels. People were starting to become curious what was “JustBook.bg” and we reach thousands of people without spending any money on marketing. Step 2: Hire a video maker, sell video content marketing to all the venues and place our logo on every single video. We were able to sell hundreds of videos with our logo, which clubs promoted from their own marketing budged. Some of our videos reached more than 300,000 people. Step 3: Make influencers take a picture with our logo on their phone and in exchange provide them with a discount code at the bars, clubs and restaurants that were our clients. Eventually, we became a modern and fashionable platform used by influencers. Step 4: Recruit a social media marketing team and our own designer and start selling advertising services to our clients as well. This enabled us to have full control of where we put our logo and ensure that on every single social media advert we have a book now button with JustBook.bg link. Not only did we get a free advertisement from our clients but also we actually got a new revenue stream. The people recruited for the social media marketing team were internships and graduates, who had no prior experience in the field. I have worked closely with them to teach and mentor them so that together we can achieve the desired results. Step 5: Work closely with PRs of Bulgarian entertainers and singers in order to promote our platform. We made a profile of each single entertainer with his or her upcoming events, biography and songs. Step 6: Hire a part-time person to write a blog, which not only improves the SEO of the website but also grabs peoples attention with interesting content about clubs, bars and restaurants. What we then did was charge businesses a small fee to be featured in the blog, which actually covered the salary of the person writing it. Step 7: Sell virtual 360-degree tour of bars, clubs and restaurants by hiring a Google approved photographer and put our logo on every picture he makes. As a result of all these steps we have managed to effectively promote JustBook.bg to thousands of people in the four biggest cities in Bulgaria without spending any money on advertising. What I learned from all these steps was that if you work hard enough you do not need huge marketing budgets to have results, you can achieve everything with the correct strategy and relations with people who are inspired by your idea and strive to succeed.
