BlackRock, Inc. is a global investment management corporation headquartered in New York City, managing assets across various classes including equities, fixed income, and alternative investments. In recent years, BlackRock has expanded into the digital asset space, reflecting a strategic commitment to integrating blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies into its offerings. In January 2024, the firm launched the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), a spot Bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) that has become the world's largest Bitcoin fund, with nearly $20 billion in assets under management by May 2024.
Furthering its blockchain initiatives, BlackRock introduced the BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL) in March 2024. This tokenized fund operates on the Ethereum network, offering qualified investors a stable value of $1 per token and distributing daily accrued dividends directly to investors' wallets. Additionally, in April 2025, BlackRock filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to launch a blockchain-based share class for its $150 billion Treasury Trust Fund, signaling a deeper integration of distributed ledger technology into traditional financial products.
BlackRock has also developed investment vehicles targeting blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies. The iShares Blockchain and Tech ETF (IBLC), launched in April 2022, provides exposure to companies involved in blockchain development and applications. In Europe, the iShares Blockchain Technology UCITS ETF (BLKC) offers similar exposure, focusing on firms engaged in blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies. These initiatives underscore BlackRock's proactive approach to embracing digital assets and blockchain technology within the evolving financial landscape.
