General Counsel

What we're looking for

Flashbots has evolved from a visionary startup to a dynamic leader in the blockchain and crypto space, facing the exciting challenges that come with rapid growth and innovation. As we embark on this new phase, we are looking for a General Counsel who will play a pivotal role in leading our legal and regulatory framework while shaping the narrative of our organization in a clear and comprehensible manner. The General Counsel will play a central role in ensuring risk mitigation, while strategically supporting and fostering Flashbots’ growth within a dynamic and innovative landscape

Responsibilities

• Set the overall legal strategy and manage all legal matters for the company

• Participate in strategic decision-making and provide guidance on legal matters to the leadership team that contribute to Flashbots's growth and success.

• Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards while aligning legal strategies with the company's growth objectives.

• Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and legal documents supporting Flashbots’ initiatives.

• Manage and oversee regulatory filings, licenses, and permits.

• Develop and implement internal policies and procedures.

• Conduct ongoing legal research to stay updated on industry trends and changes in regulations.

• Collaborate and manage relationships with external legal counsel and compliance advisors.

• Assess and proactively mitigate legal risks and potential liabilities.

• Lead and manage the legal team at Flashbots.

Qualifications

• 10+ years post-qualification experience

• Experience in corporate law, regulatory compliance or enforcement practice, financial services, cryptocurrency/blockchain, and/or securities law.

• Strong knowledge of sanctions laws and regulations, including Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctions, EU sanctions, and other international sanctions regimes.

• In-depth understanding of regulations relating to securities and commodities, reporting requirements, and compliance relating to cryptocurrency/blockchain.

• Ability to navigate regulatory issues and guide organizations through regulatory inquiries and/or demands.

• Expert at translating complex legal and regulatory language into layman's terms for internal stakeholders.

• Excellent skills relating to negotiating and drafting a wide range of commercial contracts.

• Deep understanding of the crypto/blockchain landscape and appreciation for Flashbots' mission and ethos.

• Strategic mindset capable of identifying complex challenges, devising practical solutions, and driving successful implementation.

• Highly skilled at adapting and navigating through a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape.

• Strong interpersonal skills, including communication, empathy, and the ability to inspire and manage a diverse, global team.

Bonus points if you

• Have previous in-house experience within startups.

• Are crypto-native and are familiar with the broader Ethereum ecosystem.

• Understand MEV and how Flashbots fits into the crypto landscape

About Flashbots

Flashbots started in 2020 as a research and development organization formed to mitigate the negative externalities and existential risks posed by Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) to smart-contract blockchains, starting with Ethereum. We build products to maximally decentralize public blockchains, redistribute MEV, and empower users. We work closely with our community to ensure that our products have a positive impact, are secure, and can be used in production at scale.

Our Impact

Since the launch of Flashbots, we have had an immense impact on the world of cryptocurrency. The Flashbots Auction was launched in alpha in January 2021 and was quickly adopted by almost all Ethereum miners. Prior to Ethereum's Merge in 2022, Flashbots launched MEV-Boost, a temporary solution for out-of-protocol proposer-builder separation. MEV-Boost has since been adopted by over 90% of Ethereum validators and has significantly influenced the Ethereum PoS ecosystem. Now, Flashbots continues its journey with the introduction of MEV-Share as we continue our journey toward SUAVE.

Our Research

Flashbots Research is an independent arm of the organization that aims to become the hub of MEV research. In addition to conducting in-house analysis, Flashbots Research collaborates with external researchers at other institutions via an external grants program. Flashbots Research continues to publish seminal research on MEV, covering a wide range of topics including cross-chain MEV, EIP1559 and MEV, how ETH2 affects MEV, SGX and privacy, and more.
